On October 15, members of the Los Medanos College (LMC) community gathered to support undocumented students during a day-long event titled “Stand with Immigrants.” Sponsored by the Equity & Inclusion and Student Life offices, the event aimed to foster a sense of community and safety.

Lindsay Litowitz, a program coordinator for Student Life, played a key role in organizing the event. She emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff to connect and share experiences.

Attendees had the opportunity to learn about various resources available to undocumented students. These included financial aid options, free services provided by the Immigration Institute of the Bay Area, and information about immigrant rights when interacting with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Veronica Guinto, a representative from the Immigration Institute of the Bay Area, expressed that the event offered not only a safe space but also a chance for students to educate themselves about immigration issues.

Student Darrius Taylor attended the event to gain insight into the challenges immigrants face. “I’m new to this, but I learned not to be afraid to ask for help from faculty and the community,” he said.

The event featured discussions where attendees shared personal immigration stories, reflecting on their experiences and those of their families. Mali Wyatt, a student ambassador for Student Life, noted that some students raised concerns about obstacles they faced in their education and lives.

Jazmin Morales, who helped organize the event, commented on the positive turnout, saying, “There was a really good turnout.”

A group of attendees gathered for a photo on the quad steps, proudly wearing “I Stand with Immigrants” T-shirts provided at the event. Among those joining the photo were Interim Student Life Director Robert Delgado and LMC President Pamala Ralston.

Following the group photo, a panel discussion addressed students’ questions and concerns regarding their undocumented status.
