MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — As Hispanic Heritage Month concludes on October 15, WKRG’s parent company, Nexstar, is showcasing the stories of Hispanic and Latino Americans and their cultural contributions.
In a recent interview, WKRG News 5’s Bill Riales spoke with Juan Torres, the co-founder and CEO of Belong, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting immigrants in their transition to life in America. Torres, who is an immigrant himself, is featured in Colin Boyd Shafer’s book, “Finding American: Stories of Immigration From All 50 States.”
Torres shared that his own experiences as an immigrant inspired him to establish Belong. He emphasized the importance of having supportive connections when moving to a new country. “You need that one friend who gives you an opportunity—whether it’s through a company, a neighbor, or an institution,” he explained. “You must build trust and receive initial help to settle into the community. That’s what we aim to be: a friend to immigrants.”
Belong has been active in the community since 2011, providing essential support to newcomers. Torres noted that language barriers and employment challenges are significant hurdles for many immigrants. He believes that creating a network of support is crucial for helping them find their footing.
For those interested in getting involved with Belong, Torres mentioned that referrals often come through word of mouth within the community. The organization has established connections with various nonprofits and local resources.
Juan Torres’s story and those of other immigrants are highlighted in “Finding American,” where readers can find his narrative on page 251.
