Indonesia is under scrutiny after a security breach in its e-visa system exposed sensitive personal information of foreign tourists. This incident is linked to a technical flaw in the e-visa database, which was identified shortly after the introduction of autogate systems at airports across the country.
Tourists have reported that their personal data was visible to others while scanning QR codes on their visa documents. Australian tourist Lauren Levin shared her experience, stating she saw the full names, dates of birth, passport numbers, and photos of other travelers on her mobile device. Other visitors have reported similar issues.
The Directorate General of Immigration in Jakarta is currently investigating these incidents. A spokesperson acknowledged the problem and mentioned that the agency processes over 20,000 visa applications daily. They recognized that mistakes can occur but assured that they are actively working to resolve the issues.
The full extent of the breach is still unclear, but it may affect thousands of tourists who used the e-visa system.
