Portuguese Business Leaders Encouraged to Utilize China’s New Visa-Free Travel Policy

by Hyacinth

Macao authorities are inviting prominent Portuguese business and civic leaders to visit the Chinese mainland, utilizing a new visa-free policy that takes effect today. According to the Portuguese news agency Lusa, this policy allows Portuguese nationals to travel to the mainland without a visa for up to 15 days.

Vincent U, president of the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), announced that invitations will be extended to Portuguese delegates attending the 29th Macau International Fair. This event starts tomorrow and continues until Saturday. U mentioned that mayors and other civic leaders present at the fair will also receive invitations.

On September 30, Beijing announced that Portuguese nationals would be allowed to travel to the mainland without visas. This decision followed earlier announcements that included several European countries such as France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. The initial exclusion of Portugal raised concerns about a potential diplomatic snub, particularly after Portugal decided not to include Chinese-made telecommunications equipment in its 5G network.
