HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The United Way of Southwestern Indiana issued a joint statement with local leaders on Monday to denounce anti-immigrant hate.
The statement highlights that charitable organizations supporting local immigrant communities have received online threats. Additionally, leaders from the local Haitian community have faced violence. The leaders are urging members of the community to speak out against all threats and acts of violence targeting immigrants.
The statement is endorsed by several local leaders, including United Way, the Community Foundation Alliance, Dr. David B. Smith, Superintendent of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC), Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry, and City Council Members Ben Trockman, Missy Mosby, Zac Heronemus, Alex Burton, Angela Koehler Lindsey, Jim Brinkmeyer, Mary Allen, Paul Green, and Courtney Johnson.
The complete statement reads:
“In recent weeks, harmful rhetoric against the Haitian immigrant community has grown in national media. In Evansville, this hostility has increased, leading to online threats against charitable organizations that support immigrants. More disturbingly, local Haitian leaders have been victims of violence.
Evansville’s motto is ‘E is for Everyone.’ We are dedicated to living out this principle through our actions. Many in our community have immigrant roots from just a few generations ago, and we benefit greatly from our immigrant neighbors. Their art, food, culture, talents, and diverse perspectives enrich our community.
We stand united in condemning all threats and violence against our immigrant friends and neighbors. We are committed to fostering a community where everyone’s dignity is respected. Protecting the dignity and safety of our immigrant residents is not just a moral duty; it is a shared responsibility for all Evansville residents.
We invite you to join us in denouncing hate and violence in any form. Together, we can ensure that Evansville remains a place where ‘everyone’ truly means everyone.”
