COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Columbus City Council is exploring the establishment of a Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs to support the city’s growing immigrant population.
The proposed commission aims to help immigrants overcome language barriers and assist those with qualified degrees in maintaining their professional status after arriving in the U.S.
Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla is spearheading this initiative. She highlighted the importance of including immigrant voices in a cohesive environment to help the council make informed decisions.
“We needed to build the infrastructure for the growth we are experiencing. One key takeaway was the need for ongoing conversations,” Barroso de Padilla stated. For several years, she has been organizing open dialogues to better understand the needs of Columbus’s immigrant community.
