Haitian-Americans and other immigrant groups gathered in Flatbush, Brooklyn, on Tuesday afternoon to protest false statements about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.
The rally was sparked by remarks from Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump during last week’s debate. Trump falsely claimed that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were involved in abducting and eating pets. There is no evidence to support these accusations.
Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, and other allies have echoed these claims.
In response, Ohio state police have increased security around schools in Springfield after receiving at least 33 bomb threats aimed at various schools, Springfield City Hall, and state motor vehicle offices.
On Tuesday, State Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn appeared on NY1’s “Inside City Hall” with political anchor Errol Louis to address the situation. Bichotte Hermelyn, who represents parts of Flatbush, Ditmas Park, and East Midwood in Brooklyn, also serves as the chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party.
