Immigration Takes Center Stage in 2024 Presidential Race.
Immigration has emerged as a key issue in the 2024 presidential race, with Republican nominee Donald Trump pledging to intensify the strict policies of his previous term by deporting 10 million immigrants. Trump has characterized the situation as an “invasion,” calling for harsher measures to address it.
On the Democratic side, the party is also emphasizing border control at their National Convention this week in Chicago. President Joe Biden highlighted his executive action aimed at limiting the number of asylum seekers at the southern U.S. border. Additionally, Vice President Kamala Harris has committed to increasing the number of border agents if elected.
To explore these developments, a roundtable discussion was held in Chicago featuring Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas, an immigrant rights organization; Maria Hinojosa, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and founder of Futuro Media; and Marisa Franco, director and co-founder of Mijente, a national digital organizing hub for Latinx and Chicanx communities.
