At the Democratic National Convention, Democrats are turning to Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) as a key speaker on immigration and border security, Axios has learned.
Suozzi will address the convention on Wednesday, joining other Democratic lawmakers in a segment dedicated to immigration. His inclusion underscores how his centrist approach on border issues has resonated within the party.
Suozzi gained attention for his February special election victory, where he broke from his party to adopt a more moderate stance on border issues. This strategy has since influenced other Democrats.
Suozzi’s speech is expected to echo his campaign messages, including criticism of Republicans for obstructing a bipartisan border deal. Punchbowl News first reported Suozzi’s speaking slot, though the specific focus of his remarks was not previously disclosed.
In a Monday interview with Axios, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.) praised Suozzi’s border strategy. DelBene highlighted Suozzi’s direct approach, noting his criticism of Republicans for abandoning a bipartisan agreement.
“Tom Suozzi tackled the issue head-on and held Republicans accountable for their failure to support a bipartisan deal,” DelBene said. “Voters appreciated his straightforward approach and his clear plan of action.”
The convention’s agenda includes a section titled “Securing our Border & Fixing the Broken Immigration System,” which outlines plans to enhance legal immigration pathways, increase funding for border patrol agents, and invest in new technology for the southern border.
