President Milanović Highlights Importance of Immigrant Integration in Croatia.
On August 14, Croatian President Zoran Milanović declared that immigration is the most critical challenge facing the country today. Speaking at a special session of the Jelsa Municipal Council on Hvar island, Milanović stressed the need for ongoing efforts to ensure that immigrants successfully integrate into Croatian society. This includes learning the language, adopting local customs, and blending into the cultural fabric.
Milanović described immigration as a new reality and the biggest challenge Croatia has ever encountered. He made these comments during the council session, which also celebrated the municipality’s day and the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, its patron saint. The President noted, “Immigration and the arrival of foreigners is a reality and the most significant challenge Croatia has ever faced.”
In addition to discussing immigration, Milanović addressed global issues, saying, “We are witnessing wars, conflicts in Russia and Ukraine, and crimes in Gaza. Although these events are troubling, we must stay intelligent and focused on our own duties.”
Milanović also touched on the issue of Croatia’s declining population, suggesting that this trend is unlikely to change. He emphasized the need for continuous improvement and maintaining high standards despite these challenges.
The session was attended by Health Minister Vili Beroš, who represented the Prime Minister.
