New Jersey Expands Protections for Immigrant Workers Against Retaliation.
New Jersey has enacted new protections for immigrant workers whose immigration status may be threatened when they report labor violations.
Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way recently signed a law imposing penalties of up to $10,000 on employers who reveal or threaten to reveal a worker’s immigration status to the government in an effort to cover up potential violations of state wage, benefits, or tax laws.
“By setting penalties for employers who misuse an employee’s immigration status to break the law, we will safeguard workers’ rights and ensure businesses are held accountable for exploitative practices,” said State Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz, D-Essex. Ruiz co-sponsored the legislation (S2869) alongside Sen. Angela McKnight, D-Hudson.
