KRG Guarantees the Safety of Foreign Workers and Simplifies Visa Processes

by Hyacinth

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is committed to protecting the rights of foreign workers and simplifying the visa process for tourists visiting the region.

In Kurdistan, a dedicated “Labor” department oversees the management of foreign workers through various companies that recruit employees from countries such as Africa, Arab nations, Nepal, and Indonesia. Recent data from the department shows a steady increase in the number of foreign workers coming to Kurdistan for domestic services, office positions, and roles in the private sector.

The KRG’s open-door policy has encouraged more foreigners to seek work visas by ensuring security and stability in the region. This policy has led to a rise in visa applications from investors and employers worldwide, who submit applications daily through companies while notifying the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, and the Erbil Residency Office.

In an interview with Kurdistan24, Farid Ali Haider, Director of the Labor Directorate for Social Security of Foreign Workers, emphasized the KRG’s comprehensive legal framework, which plays a crucial role in attracting foreign workers and employers to Kurdistan. Many foreigners find a second home in the region and often apply for residency after their contracts end.

Interview Highlights:

Interviewer: What is your role in this office?

Farid Ali Haider: I oversee the issuance of work visas under KRG laws that protect foreign citizens. After a company submits a visa application, it must meet specific requirements. Workers must renew their contracts within two months at our department after signing their employment and residency agreements. This process depends on the worker meeting health, tax, and workplace regulations. The requesting company must also fulfill conditions regarding salary and employment contracts. If a worker becomes seriously ill, the company must notify us immediately so we can facilitate their return home.

Interviewer: Are only investors allowed to apply for these workers’ visas?

Farid Ali Haider: No, the contracts are open to anyone, not just investors or mall owners. Individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities needing personal care services can also apply. Employers must sign a pledge at the Erbil Justice Office that includes 19 stipulations. They must provide accommodation, communicate effectively with the worker, and ensure timely payment. Employers and private sector companies can request foreign workers, and larger establishments can apply for multiple workers as long as they meet our requirements. Restaurant and hotel owners must prioritize the health and social security of their workers, as the KRG takes worker complaints seriously.

Interviewer: What happens if a foreign worker has an accident or dies unexpectedly in Kurdistan?

Farid Ali Haider: We have a specialized committee that investigates such incidents, including deaths, traffic accidents, and serious illnesses. After completing the investigation, we inform the worker’s consulate and provide a detailed report to assist with the repatriation of the body. If a company fails to ensure the worker’s health, it faces severe penalties under the law. Additionally, the worker’s family can file a lawsuit against the company to reclaim their rights, potentially leading to contract cancellation and the worker’s deportation.

Interviewer: Do foreign workers feel comfortable in Kurdistan?

Farid Ali Haider: Yes, they do. Foreign workers find Kurdistan to be a stable environment where their rights are respected without discrimination. Many choose to renew their contracts and stay in Erbil, viewing Kurdistan as a home for those in need.

Interviewer: Is it true that foreign worker contracts have become a gateway to trade?

Farid Ali Haider: There may be isolated incidents, but it has not become a widespread problem. Some companies have tried to deceive Kurdish citizens living in Erbil, but overall, this issue remains limited.
