EU Commission Demands Explanation from Hungary on Eased Visa Rules for Russians and Belarusians.

The European Union Commission has formally requested an explanation from Hungarian authorities regarding the recent facilitation of visa rules for Russians and Belarusians. The Commission has set a deadline of August 19 for Hungary to respond, according to Schengen.News.

In July, Hungary expanded its guest worker program to include nationals from Russia and Belarus. This program allows Russians and Belarusians to obtain work visas under relaxed rules without the usual clearance procedures. These visas are valid for two years and can be extended for another three years, potentially leading to permanent residence and family settlement in Hungary.

The relaxation of visa rules for these nationalities has raised security concerns within the EU. Consequently, the Commission has demanded clarity from Hungary on this matter.

EU Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper revealed that Ylva Johansson, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, sent a letter asking Hungary to provide detailed information about the scope of this scheme and its compliance with EU law. During a recent briefing, Hipper emphasized that Russia poses a security threat to the EU and reminded Hungary of its obligations to ensure compliance with the Schengen Border Code.

Calls for Stricter Measures Against Hungary

In response to Hungary’s decision, 67 members of the European Parliament have called for stricter measures against the country. They sent a letter to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, urging the Commission to introduce border controls and consider suspending Hungary from the Schengen Area if it refuses to change its visa policy.

Tytti Tuppurainen, a member of the Finnish Parliament and leader of the Social Democratic Parliamentary Group, has also advocated for tough measures. Tuppurainen suggested excluding Hungary from the Schengen Area and implementing border controls.

Other EU leaders have echoed these sentiments, calling for swift action to address Hungary’s decision, which they believe could jeopardize the EU’s security.
