UAE Announces Two-Month Grace Period for Residence Visa Violators.
The UAE authorities announced on Thursday that residence visa violators will be granted a two-month grace period to have their fines waived. This grace period, starting September 1, will allow violators to avoid financial penalties in line with the Federal Law on the Entry and Residency of Foreigners.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) will take all necessary steps to implement this initiative. This includes waiving fines and legal consequences, making it easier for violators to either adjust their status or leave the country.
In a statement, the ICP said the decision aims to give violators a new chance to regularize their status in accordance with the law. This reflects the UAE’s values of compassion and tolerance. The ICP added that procedures for this amnesty will be announced soon.
Residence Visa Rules
The validity of residence visas in the UAE varies based on the type and sponsor. Sponsored visas may be valid for 1, 2, or 3 years, while self-sponsored visas can last for up to 5 or 10 years.
Individuals who fail to leave the country or renew their visas before they expire will incur fines. As of 2023, these penalties have been standardized. Residents, tourists, and visit visa holders who overstay now pay Dh50 per day, down from the previous Dh100.
Expats wishing to renew their visas are given grace periods of up to six months after their residence visa is canceled or expired.
