Thailand’s recent decision to prolong visa-free visits for Hong Kong residents is expected to strengthen business connections and attract more visitors from the financial hub, despite a recent tragic incident in Bangkok, industry leaders confirmed.
The extension, announced on Monday, allows Hong Kong residents to stay visa-free for up to 60 days, aiming to boost Thailand’s tourism sector.
Anthony Lam Sai-ho, Executive Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, welcomed the move, highlighting its benefits for Hong Kong businesses operating in Thailand. He emphasized the country’s importance as a manufacturing hub closely linked to Hong Kong.
Digital marketing professional Tiffie Cheung Hoi-tung, who frequently works remotely in Thailand, expressed her approval of the visa extension. She noted that the longer stay simplifies her travel and work arrangements, making accommodation costs more economical.
Long-time Thailand resident Roger Hu Wai-chung also endorsed the measure, pointing out its advantages for tourists exploring Thailand’s diverse provinces, potentially boosting tourist spending.
Despite safety concerns following a recent tragic event at a Bangkok hotel involving six fatalities, including suspect Sherine Chong, who allegedly used cyanide, Hong Kong travelers and tourism officials remain optimistic about ongoing visits to Thailand.
According to Thai tourism data, the country attracted nearly 15 million tourists in the first five months of 2024, generating substantial revenue, with mainland China leading in arrivals and Hong Kong ranking 16th.
Steve Huen Kwok-chuen, Executive Director of EGL Tours, assured that ongoing tours to Bangkok remained unaffected by the incident, attributing it to an isolated event.
Overall, the visa extension aims to strengthen ties between Thailand and Hong Kong amid ongoing tourism and business activities.
