Keir Starmer Becomes UK’s New Prime Minister, Promises Changes in Immigration and Education.
Keir Starmer is Britain’s new Prime Minister following a significant victory for the Labour Party after over a decade in opposition. This change brings new opportunities for foreigners wishing to reside in the UK and international students aspiring to study at UK universities.
Focus on Immigration and Education
Immigration was a major topic in the 2024 general election, with both main parties promising to lower net migration levels. How the new UK administration handles immigration is expected to significantly impact the future of overseas students and the British economy.
“Keir Starmer has taken a nuanced view of immigration. He is committed to tackling low-skilled immigration by training local workers, while also supporting migration that adds skills and benefits society,” says Ruth Arnold, Executive Director of External Affairs at Study Group.
UK’s Appeal to International Students
The UK is the second most popular destination for international students, hosting 700,000 students worldwide due to its strong international reputation, high-quality research, and attractive graduate routes.
Policy Updates and Changes
Reducing net migration was a primary goal for the Conservative party. The UK government updated its immigration and international student enrollment policies in January 2024, with more changes expected later in the year.
Before the elections, the Conservatives set up a Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to review the graduate route. This route allows graduates from British universities to work in the UK for two years after completing their studies. The MAC recommended keeping the graduate route in its current form, providing relief to overseas students. Keir Starmer supports this route, especially for high-skilled people in tech and innovation.
Impact of New Immigration Rules
The new rules for international students and immigrants have started showing results. There has been an almost 80% drop in student-dependent applications in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Since January, the British Home Office has granted 139,100 visas to skilled workers, health and care workers, and students, down from 184,000 in the same period last year.
The salary threshold for the Skilled Worker visa has increased from £26,200 to £38,700, with the impact of this change to be seen in future statistics.
Economic Growth and Support for International Students
“Sir Keir’s number one task is economic growth to power national renewal. In constituencies like his own, international students bring benefits worth more than £400 million. He understands the vital role international students play in UK university finances and local economies. Universities expect Labour to continue supporting international students,” adds Arnold.
Financial Challenges in Higher Education
A report titled ‘UK Higher Education Financial Sustainability Report January 2024’ highlights financial challenges in UK higher education, which could impact quality, student outcomes, and international standing, potentially undermining economic benefits and affecting student retention.
Future of Immigration Policy
The new UK administration’s stance on immigration will be closely monitored, with the potential for continued support or tighter regulations for international students.
