Quebec’s Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration has introduced a cap on family sponsorship applications, effective immediately from June 26, 2024, until June 25, 2026.
Under this new measure, a total of 13,000 applications will be accepted during this period, distributed as follows:
10,400 applications for spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children aged 18 and older.
2,600 applications for fathers, mothers, grandparents, or other eligible relatives.
Once this limit is reached, the Ministère will cease accepting further applications. However, several exemptions apply:
Applications for a sponsor’s dependent minor child or for minor children the sponsor intends to adopt.
An orphaned minor child of the sponsor’s sibling, nephew, niece, grandson, or granddaughter.
Applications for an adult child of the sponsor who is dependent due to disability, provided the sponsored individual is not married or in a common-law relationship.
The cap does not restrict applications to add dependents to an already sponsored person or to a sponsored individual awaiting permanent residency after an approved application.
The Ministère will issue a public notice upon reaching the application cap. Non-exempt applications received thereafter will be returned unprocessed, with no application fees charged.
Quebec Premier François Legault has previously linked the province’s housing challenges to an influx of temporary residents.
