29 Factory Workers Detained for Immigration Offenses

RAWANG: The Immigration Department detained 29 factory workers from Nepal and Bangladesh during a raid at a factory warehouse in Kundang.

Enforcement division director Basri Othman said the operation took place at 11 a.m. on June 24.

“A total of 66 Immigration Department personnel, 11 Labour Department personnel, and eight Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission personnel were involved in the raid,” Othman stated at the scene.

“We gathered intelligence and monitored the factory for a week following a public tip-off about foreigners working here. We checked 128 individuals and detained 29 of them for various offenses under the Immigration Act.”

The Labour Department’s enforcement and Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants unit chief, Abdul Kadir Muhamad, mentioned that the employer had set up accommodations for the workers which were not declared with the department.

“Six of the workers were staying at accommodations provided by their employer. We will open investigations under the Employees’ Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990,” he said.

The detained workers were taken to the Immigration Department headquarters in Putrajaya for further action.
