Thailand Launches Long-Term Digital Nomad Visa to Attract Global Remote Workers

by Hyacinth

Thailand has launched a new visa program designed to attract digital nomads and remote workers, capitalizing on the global trend towards remote employment post-pandemic. Similar initiatives have been rolled out by countries like Türkiye, Canada, Italy, and Japan in recent months. Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), unveiled on May 30, extends the welcome mat for up to five years, inviting applicants to work from vibrant spaces in Bangkok or scenic locales like Koh Samui.

According to Thailand’s foreign ministry spokesman, Chai Wacharonke, the DTV targets digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, and those interested in immersing themselves in Thai culture, including activities like learning muay Thai and Thai cuisine. Applicants, who must be at least 20 years old and employed outside Thailand, face a visa fee of 10,000 Thai baht (approximately US$272). Unlike other programs, Thailand’s DTV does not impose a minimum income requirement, a significant departure from previous visa schemes.

Moreover, DTV holders can bring their families without additional visa requirements. While applications will soon be accepted online through Thailand’s e-visa portal (available to select nationalities, including Americans) or via Thai consulates and embassies, holders must exit and re-enter the country every 180 days, paying the visa fee each time.

Thailand, known for its appeal to expats and digital nomads due to its affordable living costs, cuisine, and hospitality, anticipates increased interest, possibly influenced by media exposure such as the HBO series “The White Lotus.” The show’s impact on tourism in previous filming locations underscores Thailand’s potential as a favored destination in the years ahead.
