The Australian government’s recent announcement regarding changes to student visa eligibility has sparked concern among temporary visa holders. Effective July 1, the Department of Home Affairs will cease accepting onshore applications for student visas from holders of Temporary Graduate, Visitor, and Maritime Crew visas. This move is part of the government’s Migration Strategy aimed at addressing frequent visa changes among temporary visa holders in the country.
The policy shift has left many, including individuals like Richard and Jennifer Perez, feeling caught off guard. The Perez couple, whose onshore student visa application was recently rejected, now find themselves in a state of uncertainty. They are among a growing number of temporary visa holders considering an appeal to the Department of Home Affairs.
Statistics reveal that nearly 36,000 student visa applications were lodged onshore by tourists within a year. Additionally, 32% of Temporary Graduate Visa holders reapplied for student visas to extend their stay in Australia.
The new regulations are expected to significantly impact the plans and futures of many temporary visa holders who were banking on pursuing further studies in Australia.
