USCIS Initiates Work Permit Process for Select Palestinians in the U.S.

by Hyacinth

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has initiated a procedure enabling Palestinians residing in the United States under temporary immigration status to seek employment authorization.

In February, President Joe Biden issued a memorandum granting Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) to certain Palestinians already residing in the U.S. DED offers a temporary immigration status safeguarding individuals from deportation due to risks such as violence or other compelling circumstances in their home country.

The DED status spans 18 months, and as per the recent announcement, eligible Palestinians under this status can now pursue work permits within this timeframe.

USCIS clarifies that Palestinians who were not in the U.S. at the time of the memo’s issuance in February or those with felony convictions are ineligible for both the DED status and the associated work permit.
