On Monday, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain called on Canadian authorities to expedite visa processing for Bangladeshi nationals, particularly for students. This request comes as Bangladesh faces significant challenges, including hosting around 1.3 million Rohingya refugees, and the government seeks international cooperation to address these issues.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by Canada’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Ajit Singh, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting included officials from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomats from the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka.
Key Discussions on Bilateral Relations
During the meeting, the Foreign Affairs Adviser congratulated Singh on his new role and emphasized the need for continued international support, particularly from Canada, regarding the Rohingya crisis and the sustainable return of refugees to their homeland.
The two leaders also discussed key areas of cooperation, including agricultural partnerships, trade and investment opportunities, the financial sector, and the ongoing Rohingya issue. Singh acknowledged these concerns and assured full support in addressing them.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the strong bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and Canada. Focus areas for future collaboration include trade, investment, agriculture, capacity building, skill development, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Foreign Affairs Adviser assured Singh of Bangladesh’s full support during his tenure to enhance the partnership between the two countries.
