President-elect Donald Trump announced new nominees and appointments on Thursday to support his tough immigration and homeland security policies.
Trump named Rodney Scott as commissioner of Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Scott, a veteran of nearly 30 years in the Border Patrol, previously served as the CBP chief during the final year of the Trump administration and the early months of the Biden administration. He played a key role in implementing Trump’s Remain in Mexico Policy, Title 42, and Safe Third Country agreements.
Trump also appointed Caleb Vitello, the current assistant director of the Office of Firearms and Tactical Programs in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as acting director of ICE.
In addition, Trump selected Tony Salisbury, who currently leads ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations in Miami, as the deputy homeland security adviser for the White House Homeland Security Council. Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, which represents over 17,000 Border Patrol agents and support staff, was nominated as Trump’s ambassador to Chile.
Immigration was a central issue in Trump’s campaign, and he plans to begin deporting hundreds of thousands of people within his first 100 days. He also aims to reverse President Joe Biden’s immigration policies. Allies of Trump’s administration expect the White House to take a strong role in shaping immigration policy, with Border Czar Tom Homan and policy adviser Stephen Miller leading the effort.
