The Tacoma City Council is currently seeking volunteers to fill four positions on the Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs. The available roles include two general members, one alternate, and one position for a youth or young adult under 25 years old.
The Commission works to engage Tacoma’s immigrant and refugee communities, collaborating with local partners and city staff to identify and address challenges faced by these groups. Members help design programs and services that promote greater participation in Tacoma’s economic, cultural, and civic life.
Created by City Council Resolution 40858 in 2021, the Commission consists of 13 members, one alternate, and one youth or young adult member. Council members recommend candidates, and the City Council makes the final appointments. Once appointed, commissioners study issues affecting immigrants and refugees and provide policy recommendations to improve services and support.
Applicants must have experience or expertise in immigrant issues and a commitment to promoting equity for immigrant and refugee communities. In keeping with Tacoma’s commitment to equity and anti-racism, applications from underrepresented groups, such as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, individuals with disabilities, seniors, youth, veterans, immigrants, and refugees, are strongly encouraged.
Commission members serve three-year terms, with a maximum of three consecutive terms unless completing an unexpired term. They must also complete mandatory training on the Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act within 90 days of their appointment.
