In a bid to enhance tourism and deepen its connection with the African diaspora, Ghana has reintroduced its temporary visa-on-arrival policy for international visitors. The new policy will be in effect from December 1, 2024, to January 15, 2025, allowing tourists to enter the country without requiring pre-approval for a visa. This move is part of the broader “December in GH” campaign and the “Beyond the Return” initiative.
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, officially announced the policy, which aims to offer a smoother travel experience and attract more visitors to enjoy the country’s festive season and vibrant cultural offerings.
Strengthening Bonds with the African Diaspora
The visa-on-arrival policy is designed to build on Ghana’s “Beyond the Return” campaign, which was launched in 2019 as part of the “Year of Return” initiative. The program celebrates the historic relationship between Africa and its global diaspora. The Ministry of Transport has highlighted that the new policy is a crucial step in drawing more Africans from the diaspora, as well as international travelers, to explore the country.
Akwasi Agyeman, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, emphasized the importance of the new visa regime, urging travelers to take advantage of this opportunity and immerse themselves in Ghana’s exciting year-end festivities.
December in GH: A Festival of Culture and Celebration
“December in GH” is one of the key highlights of Ghana’s tourism calendar, offering a wide range of cultural events, including music festivals, art exhibitions, and traditional celebrations held across the country. By waiving the pre-departure visa requirement, Ghana hopes to attract more visitors eager to experience its rich culture and unique traditions.
This annual event is not just a celebration, but also an opportunity for members of the African diaspora to reconnect with their heritage, strengthening the values of community and shared experiences. Since its inception in 2019, “December in GH” has become a major draw for visitors, further establishing Ghana as a top destination for year-end celebrations.
A Global Invitation
Under the new policy, international visitors can obtain their visa upon arrival in Ghana, simplifying the travel process and eliminating the need for pre-trip visa applications. This change is expected to improve the arrival experience for tourists and reduce administrative hurdles.
The Minister of Transport, Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, has called on airlines to update their systems to accommodate the new visa-on-arrival policy.
With this initiative, Ghana invites travelers from around the world to experience its renowned hospitality and dynamic culture. Visitors can learn more about the “December in GH” events and travel arrangements by visiting the official campaign website.
