Indian-origin American entrepreneur and Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy has once again voiced concerns about the U.S. immigration system, calling it “broken” and accusing it of rewarding dishonesty. His comments came in response to a viral TikTok podcast clip where he discussed the flaws in the current immigration framework.
Ramaswamy took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his views. “The #1 human attribute that our immigration system currently rewards isn’t your intelligence, willingness to work hard, or your love of America. It’s your willingness to lie to the US government. That must change, and it will,” he wrote.
In the viral clip, Ramaswamy explained that the current system, particularly the asylum process, encourages dishonesty. He pointed out that individuals seeking asylum under false pretenses, such as claiming to face imminent harm due to race or religion when that is not the case, are often rewarded. “If you’re coming from another country and can’t truthfully say you’re at risk of bodily harm, you won’t qualify for asylum. But if you’re willing to lie, you do. That’s the broken system we have today,” he stated.
Ramaswamy tied these immigration challenges to wider frustrations within the conservative movement. He emphasized the need for reform in both legal and illegal immigration processes. He also highlighted the importance of securing the U.S. border as a first step in addressing illegal immigration before tackling broader policy changes.
A strong supporter of former President Donald Trump, Ramaswamy aligned his views with Trump’s policies, advocating that immigration reform must begin with enforcing the rule of law. He has previously referred to measures like mass deportations and cutting federal funding for undocumented immigrants as “pragmatic,” believing these actions would encourage “self-deportation” while addressing the crisis.
Ramaswamy’s stance reflects his broader vision for immigration reform, one he argues is rooted in American meritocracy and constitutional principles. As the son of legal immigrants, he has consistently stressed the importance of following legal procedures to enter the U.S. and has opposed policies that reward those who bypass the law.
