Exciting News: Kazakhstan’s New Neo Nomad Visa is Coming Soon!

by Hyacinth

In November 2024, Kazakhstan officially introduced a new visa program for remote workers, the Neo Nomad Visa. This makes Kazakhstan the first country in Central Asia to offer a digital nomad visa, a move expected to inspire other neighboring nations to follow suit. With more than 40 countries already offering similar visas, Kazakhstan’s initiative aims to tap into the growing global trend of remote work.

The Neo Nomad Visa will be valid for one year, although there is no information yet on whether it can be renewed. Additionally, details regarding the visa’s tax implications remain unclear. Currently, non-residents in Kazakhstan are only taxed on income earned within the country, while residents face a 10% flat tax on worldwide income. The government is expected to clarify tax rules before the visa’s official launch.

It is also unknown whether the visa allows applicants to bring spouses or dependents, but updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

What Is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa permits remote workers—whether freelancers, employees, or business owners—to live and work from a foreign country for a limited period. Applicants must work remotely full-time and meet income requirements set by the host country. Some digital nomad visas even provide pathways to permanent residency and eventual citizenship.

Most digital nomad visas allow applicants to bring family members, though some restrict visas to individuals only. Importantly, digital nomad visas do not permit visa holders to seek employment in the local job market.

How to Apply for the Kazakhstan Digital Nomad Visa

The application process details for the Kazakhstan digital nomad visa have yet to be announced. Stay tuned for updates on how to apply as the information becomes available.

How to Visit Kazakhstan Now

While the digital nomad visa is still in the works, remote workers can still visit Kazakhstan, although they may be limited in their stay length. Several countries have visa-free entry agreements with Kazakhstan, offering stays from 30 to 90 days. However, without a digital nomad visa, visitors will not be able to stay as long as they would under the new program.

Kazakhstan as a Destination for Digital Nomads

Kazakhstan is quickly becoming a popular destination for remote workers, offering a unique blend of modern amenities and scenic landscapes. The capital, Astana, and the largest city, Almaty, both feature growing coworking spaces, reliable internet, and affordable living options, making them ideal hubs for digital nomads.

Almaty, in particular, boasts a vibrant expat community, a thriving café culture, and stunning mountain views, providing a perfect mix of work and leisure. Astana is known for its futuristic architecture and cultural events, offering a more unconventional environment for nomads seeking something different.

The cost of living in Kazakhstan is considerably lower than in many Western countries, with affordable housing, food, and transportation options available to help remote workers stretch their budgets.

Kazakhstan’s diverse natural landscapes—from the snowy peaks of the Tian Shan mountains to its expansive steppes and deserts—offer plenty of opportunities for adventure. Nature lovers can explore destinations like Lake Kaindy, Charyn Canyon, and the Altai Mountains.

Kazakhstan’s rich history, rooted in the Silk Road and ancient nomadic cultures, adds an extra layer of depth for visitors. Locations like Turkistan feature ancient mausoleums and mosques, offering a glimpse into the country’s past.
