Georgia Secretary of State Calls Out Disinformation Video Ahead of Election.
ATLANTA – Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger condemned a video circulating online on Thursday night that allegedly features a Haitian immigrant with multiple Georgia IDs claiming to have voted multiple times. Raffensperger labeled the video as “false” and part of a “targeted disinformation” campaign aimed at disrupting the upcoming election.
“This is false and an example of the targeted disinformation we’ve seen this election,” Raffensperger stated in a press release. He suggested that the video might be part of foreign interference intended to create chaos ahead of the election.
Raffensperger noted that his office is collaborating with state and federal agencies, including the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), to investigate the video’s origins. He also called on social media leaders, specifically Elon Musk, to remove the video from their platforms.
“We urge Elon Musk and the leaders of other social media platforms to take this down. This is obviously fake and part of a disinformation effort,” Raffensperger said, indicating he suspects the video could be linked to Russian troll farms.
He emphasized the need for unity among Americans and warned against allowing misinformation to create divisions. “As Americans, we can’t let our enemies use lies to divide us and undermine our faith in our institutions or in each other,” he added.
CISA is actively investigating the video, while state officials are working to combat misinformation as Election Day approaches.
With one day of early voting remaining, Raffensperger reported that more than half of Georgia’s active voters, approximately 3.6 million Georgians, have already cast their ballots in the 2024 presidential election.
