When Is an Illegal Immigrant Not an Illegal Immigrant?
When they are a privileged white person, it seems. In such cases, the term used is often “enterprising expat” navigating a “legal grey area.”
The focus here is on Elon Musk, a multibillionaire known for amplifying anti-immigrant conspiracy theories. He has stated, “We should also not be allowing people in the country if they’re breaking the law.” This raises eyebrows, especially in light of a recent report by the Washington Post, which revealed that Musk likely worked in the U.S. without proper authorization in 1995. He had dropped out of Stanford to launch a startup called Zip2.
This isn’t entirely new information. Kimbal Musk, Elon’s younger brother, has openly discussed their work status in the U.S. During a 2013 conference, he referred to them as “illegal immigrants” when starting Zip2. Elon chimed in, calling it a “grey area,” prompting laughter from the audience. It seems breaking the law can be amusing for some.
Musk isn’t alone in this peculiar relationship with immigration law. A 2016 investigation by the Associated Press found that Melania Trump, often referred to as America’s second-most annoying immigrant, was paid for ten modeling jobs in the U.S. before she had legal permission to work. This didn’t stop her husband from condemning immigrants as “invaders.”
Another example of this disparity is Prince Harry. In his memoir, Spare, he candidly discussed using illegal drugs like cocaine. It’s unclear if he disclosed this information on his U.S. visa application. If he lied, it could potentially lead to deportation. A recent lawsuit from a right-wing think tank sought to access Harry’s immigration records but failed. The truth may remain hidden, but one thing is evident: immigration rules often apply unevenly. For the wealthy, borders appear more welcoming.
