New Mexico Governor Defends Vice President Harris on Bipartisan Border Legislation.
On Sunday, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham defended Vice President Kamala Harris’s support for bipartisan border legislation. She also addressed concerns that Harris is alienating voters from both ends of the political spectrum by avoiding tough discussions on immigration.
In an interview with Chris Stirewalt on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday,” Grisham was asked if Harris’s lack of a clear stance on continuing border wall construction, along with her support for a conservative bipartisan border bill, is causing discontent among voters.
“I don’t think she is stuck,” Grisham stated. “The gridlock has largely been driven by the Republican Party, especially when they held the majority.” Grisham, who supports Harris, emphasized that the vice president is open to expanding immigration and border security measures. She highlighted that supporting the bill, which did not pass in Congress, remains an option.
“She is not ruling out a bolder approach on either side,” Grisham explained. “This includes protecting individuals who are law-abiding residents and children who have known no other country. It also involves addressing illegal immigration by creating more opportunities for visas and asylum protections.”
Grisham reiterated the need for smart border security, stating, “That’s what every border state governor wants.”
The governor was also asked about Harris’s response to reporters who pressed her on whether she would continue building the southern border wall if elected. In response, Harris stated, “My highest priority is to ensure our border is secure. I will bring back the bipartisan border security bill and ensure it reaches my desk for signing.”
