Senator JD Vance Targets Immigration Programs.
Senator JD Vance of Ohio, who is running alongside former President Donald Trump, intensified Trump’s criticism of legal immigration during a campaign event in Peoria, Arizona, on Tuesday. Vance pledged to end programs that allow hundreds of thousands of immigrants to live and work in the United States.
“What Donald Trump has proposed is to stop mass parole and halt mass grants of Temporary Protected Status,” Vance stated. He acknowledged that while some individuals flee oppressive regimes, these cases should be addressed individually, rather than through broad government policies.
Approximately 864,000 immigrants currently hold legal residency under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a program established by Congress in 1990 for those escaping war and other crises. This program provides legal protection to immigrants from 16 countries, primarily from Venezuela, El Salvador, and Haiti.
Earlier this month, Trump pledged to revoke TPS for Haitian immigrants, who have faced accusations from both him and Vance, particularly in Springfield, Ohio. Vance’s comments on Tuesday suggested a broader approach, indicating that all immigrants with TPS would need to find alternative ways to remain in the U.S. or face deportation. Many of these immigrants may struggle to find other pathways to temporary protection.
A spokesperson for Vance did not provide details about the proposed changes to TPS when asked.
Additionally, Vance indicated a desire to end other parole programs that permit hundreds of thousands of immigrants to reside in the U.S. temporarily without visas or green cards. Recently, the Biden administration announced that one such program for individuals from Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, and Nicaragua would be allowed to expire. This decision reflects the political pressure faced by President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris regarding immigration issues, particularly as they approach the election.
During the event, a Telemundo reporter questioned Vance about Trump’s promise to deport Haitians with TPS and whether this would extend to immigrants from other countries. Vance continued to refer to these individuals as “illegal immigrants,” despite their legal status, blaming them for rising costs and various societal issues.
“What Kamala Harris has done,” Vance said at a military equipment factory in Peoria, “is misuse programs intended to aid those escaping tyranny, granting amnesty to millions who lack legal rights to remain in the U.S. This practice must come to an end.”
