Immigration Agency Owner Arrested for Fraud in Sriganganagar.
Sriganganagar: The owner of an immigration agency has been arrested on charges of defrauding a man of lakhs of rupees, promising to send his daughter to Canada.
According to the police, Harjit Singh was taken into custody following an investigation ordered by the court. The case was filed by Laxman Ram, a resident of Chak 7-DD village, on August 1. Harjit’s father, Lakhbir Singh, and a middleman, Shravan Singh, were also named in the complaint. The police confirmed that an investigation into their involvement is still ongoing.
Laxman Ram reported that Shravan, also from Chak 7-DD village, introduced him to Harjit Singh, who operates an immigration consultancy in Sriganganagar. Harjit had promised to help send Laxman’s daughter, Nisha, to Canada. Laxman claimed to have paid Rs 17 lakh to Harjit in several installments during 2022. Additionally, Rs 65,000 was allegedly given to Harjit’s father, Lakhbir Singh.
Laxman said that after a few days, Harjit provided him with an appointment letter for Nisha and advised them to visit the Canada Visa Application Centre in Chandigarh. However, when Laxman arrived at the center on November 8, 2022, he was informed that no such letter had been issued and no appointment had been scheduled.
Laxman confronted Harjit, accompanied by Shravan, about the fake letter. Harjit reportedly promised to send Nisha abroad and assured Laxman that he would arrange a new letter, but no further action was taken.
The case continues to be under investigation.
