Immigrants Make Our Country Stronger, and I Embrace Them

by Hyacinth

The Impact of Immigration on American Society.

Many Americans are frustrated with the anti-immigrant rhetoric from figures like Donald Trump and the apparent rise in anti-immigrant sentiment across the country. It is important to remember that immigrants, including those who came here against their will, have played a vital role in building this nation. Most Americans have immigrant ancestors in their family histories.

People come to the United States seeking better lives for themselves and their families. Generally, they work hard and contribute positively to their communities. For instance, a report from The Plain Dealer on September 13 highlighted how Haitian immigrants revitalized Springfield. Their arrival helped reverse years of population decline and contributed to a stronger economy.

Recent studies challenge the common belief that immigrants increase crime rates. In fact, these studies suggest the opposite: higher immigration rates correspond with lower crime rates. They indicate that those born in the U.S. commit crimes at a higher rate than immigrants do.

The conversation around immigration needs to change. The words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor invite people to “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” In contrast, the wall at our southern border sends a different message: “Keep Out!” This contradiction raises questions about our identity as a nation.

Immigrants enrich American society, and their presence should be welcomed.
