EU Suspends Financial Aid and Visa Liberalisation for Georgia

by Hyacinth

The European Parliament initiated discussions yesterday, led by Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, to address concerns about democratic backsliding in Georgia.

According to reports from Azernews, citing Georgian media, seven draft resolutions have been prepared on the matter. The debates and voting on these resolutions are set to conclude today.

The authors of the resolutions are urging the European Union to freeze financial aid to the Georgian government and impose sanctions on officials, with particular focus on Bidzina Ivanishvili, a key figure in Georgian politics.

The potential suspension of visa liberalization with Georgia is also included in the draft. The European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) has proposed that this measure should only be considered if personal sanctions are first applied to members of Georgia’s ruling party.
