Vice President Kamala Harris Pledges Tougher Border Restrictions Amid Immigration Criticism.
Vice President Kamala Harris is campaigning on a promise to strengthen border restrictions as Republicans criticize the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration record.
In late September, Harris visited the U.S.-Mexico border for the first time as the Democratic presidential nominee. During her visit, she supported President Biden’s recent measures to limit asylum seekers, which have led to a significant drop in border crossings. Harris indicated her intention to implement even stricter policies.
Immigration issues are longstanding, but the Biden-Harris administration has seen a record number of undocumented immigrants crossing the border in the past three years. This surge followed the easing of pandemic-related immigration restrictions.
“Solutions are at hand. From Day One, we have been offering solutions,” Harris stated.
She highlighted the recent decline in illegal immigration, noting that border crossings reached their lowest point during Biden’s presidency in September, based on internal Department of Homeland Security data obtained by CBS News.
Earlier this year, bipartisan efforts to reform the immigration system stalled in Congress after former President Donald Trump urged Republicans to oppose the legislation.
“We need Congress to act to truly fix the problem,” Harris emphasized.
Harris’s role in addressing immigration has often been misrepresented by her critics. In 2021, President Biden assigned her the task of leading diplomatic efforts to tackle the root causes of migration from Central America’s Northern Triangle, which includes Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
Trump has inaccurately referred to Harris as the administration’s “border czar.”
