Livingston County Board Approves Controversial Resolution on Illegal Immigrants.
On Monday, the Livingston County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution following a two-hour public comment session.
The resolution requires the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office to record interactions with illegal immigrants, regardless of the nature of these encounters. It also mandates that the Sheriff’s Office provide regular updates on these interactions to the Board of Commissioners.
The decision sparked a divided response from residents. Supporters argued that the resolution is necessary, while opponents criticized it as racist and politically motivated.
Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy expressed his support for the resolution in a Facebook video.
“We do have illegal immigrants here,” Murphy said. “Not all are criminals, and not all are involved in traffic offenses. However, denying their presence or refusing to track them seems unreasonable. We need to keep track because it’s a real issue.”
The ACLU of Michigan condemned the resolution, calling it a dangerous precedent. “The resolution is divisive and impractical,” the ACLU said in a statement. “It could also expose the county to expensive legal challenges, costing taxpayers.”
