Speculation persists over Prince Harry’s residency status in the United States, a month after he formally declared himself as “usually resident” in the country.
The Duke of Sussex relocated with his wife to California in 2020 after stepping down from their senior royal duties. They have since settled in Montecito, raising their children, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, two. Harry has expressed his commitment to his life in the States.
However, an expert in UK-US immigration, Charlotte Slocombe, has shed light on the potential expiration of Harry’s current visa, which permits him to reside and work in the US. Slocombe suggests that to renew his visa, Harry may require assistance from his father, King Charles.
Slocombe outlined two possible visa options for Prince Harry: the A-1 diplomatic visa or the O-1 visa for individuals with extraordinary abilities. If Harry holds a diplomatic visa, valid for five years, renewal may necessitate a letter from his father, the King.
Moreover, Slocombe explained the complications associated with obtaining a Green Card and US citizenship while on a diplomatic visa. Alternatively, the O-1 visa, commonly used by celebrities, offers a more viable option for Harry. It allows for a three-year stay, extendable annually, provided the individual intends to return to their home country.
However, pursuing US citizenship would require Harry to renounce his royal title and commit to worldwide tax obligations. While it grants work freedoms and voting rights, the process entails challenges, including swearing allegiance to the US Constitution.
In sum, Prince Harry faces visa uncertainties in the US, with potential implications for his residency and citizenship status.
