Nova Scotia Halts Immigration Applications for Restaurant Sector Temporarily

by Hyacinth

Nova Scotia, Canada – The Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP), renowned for its role in facilitating immigration and addressing labor market needs in the province, has made a significant announcement. As of noon on April 17, 2024, the program has temporarily suspended the acceptance of applications from the Accommodations and Food Service sector. This measure comes in response to an unprecedented surge in applications, raising concerns about exceeding federal allocation limits designated for the province.

In a statement released today, the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia acknowledged the decision, emphasizing ongoing discussions with governmental partners and industry stakeholders to provide support for the food and beverage sector amidst immigration and labor challenges.

This strategic pause is a decision made by the Immigration and Population Growth (IPG) branch of Labour Skills and Immigration. Its purpose is to manage application intake effectively and ensure sufficient spaces for critical sectors such as healthcare and construction. While no new applications from the Accommodations and Food Service sector will be accepted after the specified time, the IPG office will continue processing and assessing files already submitted.

The timing of this development coincides with Nova Scotia’s increasing reliance on immigrants to alleviate labor shortages, particularly in Halifax’s hospitality sector. The NSNP streams, including the Skilled Worker and International Graduate Entrepreneur programs, have played a crucial role in addressing these shortages by enabling employers to recruit foreign workers in the absence of local talent.

Nova Scotia’s decision underscores the challenges and pressures in balancing sectoral demands within the immigration system. However, it’s important to note that NSNP streams remain operational and continue to accept applications from other sectors.

Employers and prospective immigrants affected by this temporary halt are urged to stay informed through the Nova Scotia Immigration website. Further announcements and guidance on when the pause might be lifted and how to prepare for future application opportunities will be provided accordingly.
