The CGIL workers’ union in Turin has condemned the sudden and uncommunicated closure of immigration offices in the city, highlighting the negative impact on migrants and asylum seekers. The offices, located on Via Ruffini in the capital of Italy’s Piedmont region, had only recently reopened but were closed without prior notice, according to a statement from the union issued on April 14.
The CGIL, Italy’s largest union federation, reported that hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers arrived at the offices, only to find the doors shut. These individuals rely on the immigration services for essential documentation, which is necessary for their daily lives and personal safety, especially in light of recent developments at repatriation centers in Turin and Albania.
With the reopening of the Turin repatriation center, the union noted growing concerns over the treatment of rejected asylum seekers in these centers, an issue that has attracted criticism from some members of the European Parliament.
Early Morning Waits in Harsh Conditions
According to the union, many migrants were left queuing in freezing temperatures and heavy rain as early as 5 AM, hoping the offices would open at 8:30 AM. However, when the expected opening time arrived, the doors remained locked, and no explanation was given. The union further reported that the online immigration system had been malfunctioning for weeks, exacerbating the difficulties faced by those trying to access services.
A CGIL spokesperson questioned the government’s failure to address persistent issues with the online system and the understaffing of immigration offices, both of which have led to significant delays in processing requests.
Government Policies Under Scrutiny
The union also criticized the current right-wing government’s migration policies, suggesting that the closure of the immigration offices is part of a broader strategy to keep migrants in a state of illegality, which facilitates exploitation and administrative detention in repatriation centers. The CGIL spokesperson argued that this approach marginalizes migrants, forcing them into a position where they are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, without any accountability from the government.
The CGIL pledged to continue its advocacy against the government’s policies, accusing officials of prioritizing “repressive solutions” over humanitarian efforts. They also condemned the current system as inefficient and unjust, claiming it effectively denies rights to migrants and asylum seekers.
The union has vowed to keep monitoring the situation and speaking out against the ongoing challenges faced by migrants in Italy.
