Parents and students filled the auditorium at Bardin Elementary School in Salinas on Thursday for a forum addressing the concerns surrounding the Trump administration’s stricter immigration policies. The event, aimed at educating families about their legal rights, featured attorney Chris Cain, who provided insights into how undocumented immigrants can protect themselves under the law.
Attorney Cain Addresses Immigration Concerns
Cain addressed a range of legal questions raised by parents, many of whom expressed worries that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents might target their children while at school.
“I’m not so concerned about ICE coming into the schools,” Cain reassured attendees. “Schools should be a safe haven. Now, there may be some executive orders to take that away, but I believe that California will fight back against that.”
The lawyer emphasized that while executive orders may attempt to alter existing policies, the state’s strong stance on immigrant rights would likely push back against such actions.
Keeping Documentation Handy
Cain also advised families to always carry any documentation that shows their current immigration status. “It’s important to keep those documents on you at all times,” he said, offering practical guidance for those worried about potential encounters with immigration authorities.
The forum aimed to provide clarity and support for the community, addressing fears and helping individuals navigate the uncertainty surrounding immigration enforcement.
