Mayor Eric Adams Teams Up with Trump’s Border Czar to Discuss NYC’s Role in New Immigration Plan

by Hyacinth
New York City Mayor Eric Adams met with Tom Homan, the incoming border czar in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, to discuss their plans to address undocumented immigrants involved in violent crimes. The closed-door meeting on Thursday marked the latest exchange between Adams and Trump’s team, as the mayor faces federal bribery and fraud charges.
At a news conference following the meeting, Adams addressed reporters, criticizing them for holding “preconceived notions” and “distorted views” about his immigration policies. He emphasized that the city would continue to protect hardworking immigrants who contribute positively to the community, but made it clear that those involved in violent crimes would not be given such protections.
“We will not be a safe haven for those who commit violent acts,” Adams stated. “We don’t do it for citizens, and we are not going to do it for undocumented individuals.”
Homan, who served as the acting head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the first Trump administration, has pledged a strong approach against undocumented immigrants on his first day in office. President-elect Trump has promised to deport millions of undocumented individuals and threatened local leaders who oppose his policies.
Under federal law, states and municipalities cannot independently enforce immigration laws without an agreement. Currently, 60 counties and police districts, mainly in Florida, have entered into 287(g) agreements with ICE, allowing local law enforcement to assist in immigration enforcement.
Adams mentioned that his legal team is in discussions with ICE’s legal team to explore potential collaboration, including the use of executive orders, although he did not provide specifics. He also brought up concerns about gang violence in the city and on Long Island but refrained from offering further details.
When asked whether he and Homan discussed deporting undocumented immigrants who have not committed crimes, Adams declined to comment. He only stated, “From what I heard from the incoming head of ICE, we have the same desire to target those committing violent acts against innocent New Yorkers, migrants, and asylum seekers.”
Following the meeting, the mayor’s office released a press statement outlining Adams’ proposals to address the city’s immigration challenges, including calls for federal immigration reform, more resources to combat misinformation about asylum seekers, and additional federal funding to help manage the influx of migrants.
Adams’ ongoing discussions with the Trump team have sparked criticism, particularly in light of the federal charges against him. In September, Adams became the first sitting New York City mayor to be indicted, facing charges of bribery, fraud, and accepting illegal donations. The charges stem from an investigation into his time as Brooklyn borough president, with allegations that he traded political favors for gifts, travel, and financial contributions.
Adams has pleaded not guilty, denied any wrongdoing, and dismissed calls for his resignation. He has also avoided questions about seeking a pardon from Trump.
