A new Siena College poll shows that a majority of New Yorkers support President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, including nearly half of Latino respondents.
The poll, conducted between December 2 and December 5, revealed that 54% of those surveyed statewide believe New York should back Trump’s deportation efforts. In contrast, 35% are opposed to the plan. The survey, which included 834 registered voters, has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
Support for the deportation plan is strong among Republicans, with 87% in favor, as well as 54% of independents. Among Democrats, 38% expressed support, surprising given the traditionally liberal stance on immigration. Even 29% of self-identified liberals backed the controversial measure.
Demographic breakdowns show notable differences in support: 61% of men and 49% of women favor the plan. By race, 56% of white respondents, 51% of Black respondents, and 47% of Latino respondents are in favor. The support is also spread across geographic regions, with majorities in New York City, the suburbs, and upstate areas.
The survey results come amid growing concerns about the impact of the migrant crisis on New York City. City officials have estimated that the influx of migrants has cost the city around $6.1 billion. While the flow of new arrivals has slowed in recent months, over 56,000 migrants remained in the city’s shelter system as of late November. Since the spring of 2022, nearly 225,000 migrants have passed through the city’s intake system.
In response to the crisis, Mayor Eric Adams has adopted a tougher stance on immigration. He recently stated that he wants to deport migrants who have been charged with crimes before they face trial. “People who commit crimes in our city have abdicated their right to be here,” Adams said last week. “Those who are here committing crimes, robbing, shooting at police officers, raping innocent people, have been a harm to our country.”
