Los Angeles County Prepares for Trump’s Return with Millions in Support for Immigrants and Transgender Residents

by Hyacinth

Los Angeles County officials are preparing for a potential second term of Donald Trump by allocating millions in funding to support immigrants and transgender residents, who may face increased scrutiny under the incoming administration. During a recent board meeting, the County Board of Supervisors, known for its progressive stance, passed several motions aimed at countering Trump’s anti-transgender comments and his plans for mass deportations.

Supervisor Holly Mitchell expressed her concern, suggesting that this is likely the first of many motions the board will introduce as the new administration outlines its agenda. She described the situation as “surreal,” noting California’s need to defend itself against another Trump presidency.

One significant motion, proposed by Supervisors Hilda Solis and Janice Hahn, requests $5.5 million in ongoing funding for legal services for immigrants. This motion, which passed unanimously with a 4-0 vote, also aims to establish a county task force focused on federal immigration policy and to launch an educational campaign about immigrants’ legal rights. Solis highlighted the increasing demand for legal assistance, stating that her office has already seen a rise in calls from individuals seeking help.

According to the USC Equity Research Institute, Los Angeles County is home to approximately 800,000 undocumented immigrants, making up about one in twelve residents.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger, the board’s only Republican member, abstained from voting. She pointed out that there is already an immigration crisis under the current administration, citing her recent visit to Skid Row where she met families living in tents. Barger emphasized that many families believe conditions on Skid Row are better than what they left behind.

Advocates praised the county’s prompt action to provide financial support for its commitment to being a safe haven for immigrants. Shiu-Ming Cheer from the California Immigrant Policy Center remarked that while many localities pass symbolic resolutions, Los Angeles County is taking concrete steps to protect vulnerable populations.

In addition to supporting immigrants, the board unanimously approved another motion from Supervisor Lindsey Horvath to create a pilot program with a budget of $7 million over two years aimed at assisting organizations serving transgender individuals in L.A. County. This funding had been sought by advocacy groups like the TransLatin@ Coalition and will focus on providing various services to the transgender and gender-expansive communities.

The pilot program will allocate $4.5 million to organizations that serve transgender individuals, with a preference for those led by members of the community. Additionally, it includes $2 million for an external administrator to manage grant applications and enhance organizational capacity, along with $500,000 designated for a program ombudsperson.

Ahead of the vote, supporters rallied outside the county building in favor of the transgender initiative. June Paniouchkine from the TransLatin@ Coalition stated that this funding would empower their community by ensuring access to essential resources such as housing and healthcare.

The initiatives come as President-elect Trump has expressed views that challenge transgender rights and has pledged to restrict federal funding for gender transition services. Horvath emphasized that these measures are about translating words into action and demonstrating solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.

While there was little opposition during the meeting, some concerns were raised regarding how funding would be allocated and whether it was sufficient. Barger acknowledged these concerns but ultimately supported the proposal alongside her colleagues.

This proactive stance by Los Angeles County reflects its commitment to protecting vulnerable communities as they brace for potential challenges under a Trump administration.
