Palestinian Canadians are once again urging Canada to take decisive action to help their loved ones escape the Gaza Strip amid Israel’s ongoing airstrikes. They are condemning a temporary Gaza visa scheme introduced earlier this year, calling it ineffective.
Omar Omar, a spokesperson for the advocacy group Gazan Families, spoke out on Tuesday, explaining that he has spent months trying to get his relatives out of Gaza.
“It’s been over a year now, and I’m still asking that my family – stranded in Gaza, living under constant threat of death – be given the same priority and humanity that Canada has shown to others,” he said at a press conference in Ottawa.
“This long battle, this exhausting advocacy, has drained our resources. We’ve lost so much in Gaza, and here in Canada, this fight is tearing apart the lives we’ve tried to build.”
Earlier this year, the Canadian government launched a special visa program to allow Canadian citizens and permanent residents to apply to bring their extended family members from Gaza to Canada.
