Jefferson County, Ala. — President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his commitment to mass deportations upon returning to the White House, and immigration lawyers in the Birmingham area are bracing for the impact.
Michael Shabani, CEO of Shabani & Associates, expressed his readiness to support immigrants during this challenging time. “We’re going to help these immigrants the best way we know how,” he said.
Shabani, who has worked closely with immigrants for years, said Trump’s stance on deportations does not surprise him. “I saw it in 2016. This time, Mr. Trump is determined to leave his mark,” he added.
Shabani represents many blue-collar immigrants and farmers who rely on their labor, and he stressed the growing fear among his clients. “People are really, really afraid. They’re very concerned,” he said.
In a recent interview with WVTM 13’s Scott Carpenter, State Sen. Tommy Tuberville explained what he knows about Trump’s deportation plans. “They’re going to work with local and state law enforcement to remove individuals who aren’t following the American way,” Tuberville said. “They’ll be sent home, and it won’t cost nearly as much as keeping them here.”
While Shabani supports deporting immigrants who commit serious crimes, he emphasized the importance of undocumented workers to the U.S. economy. “We have 11 million immigrants here, most of whom work hard. If we remove them from the workforce, whether in Alabama or California, we’ll notice the difference,” he said.
Shabani’s firm is preparing for the possibility of mass deportations. “We’re sharpening our tools and getting ready for the removals,” he stated.
To help undocumented immigrants become legal citizens, Shabani advises seeking legal counsel and beginning the process with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
